Meet Jo – Visiting Textile Designer
Background and Training
Jo is a multi-faceted textile designer with a passion for all things craft-related. She studied Integrated Crafts at South Devon College before spending a year at Taunton College as part of her degree in textiles.
Creative Practice
Drawn to hands-on processes and experimentation, Jo enjoys working across different mediums, from woodcuts to hand-carved stamps. She often begins her creative process in one format and then translates it into textiles, resulting in thoughtful, layered designs.
Work and Community Involvement
Alongside running her own textile line, Jo also leads creative classes and activities for adults with learning disabilities. Her work reflects a balance between artistic exploration and meaningful community involvement.

Time with Us
In May 2025, Jo joined us for a few weeks in Zambia as an intern, contributing to the Kalango collection, our latest range that supports conservation through our partnership with the Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP) whilst also helping with other projects on the workshop floor.

The Kalango Collection for Conservation
a collection for conservation
Jo supported our in-house designer Jen Jarvis in creating the Kalango collection by adding her signature flower designs to the borders, complementing the wider motifs and colourways of the range.

Jo's time with Tribal
How It All Began
Jo’s journey with Tribal Textiles began in 2024 while planning a safari in Mfuwe, South Luangwa National Park. Looking for a place in Zambia that made textiles, an online search led straight to Tribal Textiles. The first result looked fantastic, and, to her surprise, it was based in Mfuwe itself – it felt like fate.
During her visit, Jo joined an art safari batik class at the Tribal Textiles shop, which led to conversations with the team about textiles, and the staff mentioned that she could look into the possibility of an internship with Tribal.
Looking Ahead
It has been a pleasure to welcome Jo into our studio, and we are excited to share her unique contributions to the Kalango collection.
